Cities on flame with rock & roll

December 16, 2007

Yesterday garage/surf/rockabilly concert was fun!! Three bands outa four were actually very good! The first one was an instrumental 60’s psychedelic revival act, you know, hippiness, mid-eastern vibe, groovy as fuck, all that jazz (all that psych). The second band played some good ol’ rockabilly, dancey-dancey. The third played almost the same, only dirtier and with a more punkish edge. The fourth act sucked, they played rock standards with a guy shouting over them… Never, NEVER, NEVER play Smoke on the Water, okay? It’s just……. Grhhhh… It’s Smoke on the Water, damnit.

There were some drunk people fighting (they were too drunk to have a normal fight,. so they just messed around then kissed and confessed being in love with each other). Whatever. Even their fighting (oh, which took place on our legs) couldn’t ruin the thing!

Great gig. Rockabilly is concert music, real concert music. I mean, I don’t really listen to ‘billy at home, it just needs the atmosphere of a crowded, smoke-filled basement.

Oh, and in my dream I bought an electric guitar. First I was considering a blue Fender, but then settled for a green something (it looked cool). Also, there was a shop assistant guy who helped me.
I want an electric guitar (:

Go-Go-Gadget Guitar!

Flying VA little picture for my dearest sister: the mighty Flying V!! She expressed certain feelings towards this cheesy instrument and succeeded holding one on a music expo. Way to go sista, Fuckela is waiting for you!

Btw, holding an electric guitar in your hand is good. Gives you the illusion of power – fuck, not the illusion, it gives you power. Mgregrhhh. Your spine straightens out, you become taller, well-built, every negative feature you might have disappear, because they are overshaded by this fantastic object.

Yeah. I wanna be a rock-star.

Well, not really. But still… A dream, yeah.

Life is pain

So, my dear only sister posted a top 5 list. I decided to dedicate a new post to the “Top 5 songs you should never listen to when you wake up, unless you want to crawl back to bed and cry into your pillow all day”.

Basically, I could compile a list consisting entirely of Lanegan songs, but that’s against the rules.

Here it goes:

1. Mark Lanegan – When Your Number Isn’t Up
I posted the lyrics for this one right before BigSista’s list and I guess it explains a lot. Plus, you get a very silent minor-key piano intro, slow but accentized drumming and low organs – and Mark’s voice… Haunting. Never-ever try this song in the morning.

2. Queens of the Stone Age – Better Living Through Chemistry
This song will paralyze you right away, with the mindfucking opening guitar… One of the best song in terms of production and textures – everything is in the right place, from the little blinks of an electric piano to the effected vocals and the droning in the middle.

3. Radiohead – Packt Like Sardines In A Crushd Tin Box
Probably my favourite Radiohead song, mainly because of the great bass-drum in the beginning. “After years of waiting, nothing came”, comes in Thom Yorke’s annoying voice, supported by various synths and stuff.
I have a funeralistic experience connected to this song. I was listening to it on my way to school. It was a dark, cloudy morning (mourning), rain pouring down from the sky and my gaze fell on an abandoned kids’ playground… Okay, this all sounds very hollywood-esque, but I nearly started to cry (:

4. The Brian Jonestown Massacre – She Made Me
Astonishing psychedelic piece. The trip sets of with undistinguishable children’s whispers, then music flows in… and you want to float away. Desperation takes over and the only exit you see is anything (drugs, hard cider) – but certainly not school or workplace.

5. The Magnetic Fields – I Die
If you’ve ever listened to this song, I’m sure you get my point. A beautiful string passage, a simple but outstanding song. Stephin Merritt growning things like “Having… forgotten… how… to cry… I die…” is not your best alarm tone.

Feel free to post your own lists!!

You hate your boss but in your dreams you can blow his head off

March 1, 2007

That’s probably my longest title so far.

So, I was thinking about putting together a dream supergroup of all my favourite musicians, but I encountered some problems.

First, what music would they play? Yeah, probably some kind of rock… That’s not the main problem. You see, if you get five/six very talented and creative musicians together, they’ll just argue or something. Two can agree on something (see: The Raconteurs), but more than that, it’s just impossible.
Also, supergroups never really get into experimentating. They take parts of their original band(s) and put it together.

So, my dream supergroup would try to do something different.

But who’d be in it? Let’s see… Read the rest of this entry »
